2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shelby County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Shelby County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region three with a 2-4 region record. The Wildcats have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. Since 2010, the Shelby County football program has struggled with a record of 14-46. Over the past 25 seasons, Shelby County has managed to compile a record of 104-159. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 5A and 285th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2009. The Wildcats are led by head coach Heath Childers who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-14 over the past two seasons at Shelby County. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Childers. Coach Childers' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 6-14 (30.0%). The Shelby County Wildcats will play in Class 5A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Wildcats remain in 5A but move from region three over to region five. It will be an uphill battle for the Wildcats if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. The Wildcats open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Holt on Friday, August 26 at Woody Clements Field. Last year the Holt Ironmen finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 4A region four. The Ironmen ended last season on a positive note with a win over Brookwood by a score of 14-13 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Shelby County and Holt have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 2-0-0 record against the Ironmen.
